New Pain Pump Helps Patients Knock-Out Pain
Englewood, NJ April 28, 2011 – Patients at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (englewoodhospital.com) now have new and innovative choices for managing post-operative pain that deliver relief without the side effects traditionally associated with the use of narcotics. Known as the ON-Q® PainBuster and C-bloc, these pain relief systems deliver a direct infusion of anesthetic to reduce pain following common surgeries.
“The days following a surgical procedure can have a significant impact on the recovery process,” said Dr. Aryeh Shander, Chief of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Hyperbaric Medicine, and Pain Management at Englewood Hospital. “While narcotics can ease pain, prolonged use can often cause side effects such as nausea, constipation and sedation which can make a patient feel worse. Patients utilizing the ON-Q systems are reporting a virtually pain-free recovery and a faster return to their daily routines.”
Patients undergoing orthopedic, laparoscopic, breast, plastic and other non-traumatic surgeries at Englewood Hospital are candidates for the ON-Q PainBuster or C-bloc. These pain management systems deliver treatment through a catheter and pump system positioned near the site of the surgery. The pump is completely portable and has no electronic or moving parts, making it easy to use for both patients and caregivers. Discharged patients can easily remove the catheter and pump at home once the pain treatment is complete.
“The most common method of care for treating post-surgical pain is the use of narcotics like morphine. These drugs are not always tolerated by patients, especially the elderly,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gudin, Director of Pain Management at Englewood Hospital. “With the ON-Q pain management systems, patients can alleviate their pain without relying on the use of narcotics thus eliminating or greatly reducing the risk of dependency. Added benefits include a faster healing time and reduced risk of infection patients.”
“Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is committed to incorporating new and effective therapies and technologies that improve patient care outcomes and satisfaction including pain management,” added Dr. Shander.
