|Joint Replacement |>Joint University|

As part of its commitment to interdisciplinary, individualized care, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, holds a “Joint University” program for patients about to undergo joint replacement surgery.

The goal of Joint University is to familiarize the patient and their “coach” (a loved one who will help the patient through their recovery) with the expectations of joint replacement surgery. The program covers a range of topics from pre-surgery planning to the progression of the post-op period.

In addition to being an informational session, Joint University is also designed to help alleviate any apprehension the patient has about the surgery and healing process.

Joint University, which lasts about two hours, is held in a group setting consisting of several patients and their coaches. The atmosphere is comfortable and friendly and refreshments are served. During the program, the group meets with the Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner, the Physical and Occupational Therapist, and the Care Coordinator. Each explain their role in the surgery and recovery process and explain what patients can do to make a smooth return to a normal life. The coaches are prepared so they will be able to provide a familiar face and a helping hand from the moment the patient arrives in their hospital room following their surgery.

Many patients find the group format is very helpful. Often, questions asked by one patient will prompt questions from others in the group, making Joint University a beneficial learning experience. Upon completion of the Joint University, the patient receives a bag and a “work out” t-shirt to wear while rehabbing from the procedure. An information-filled workbook is also given to the patient for reference and to record any notes from the program.
